As the school year winds down and the summer months approach, this is a good opportunity for the team at North Light to reflect on a wonderful school year and a great way to celebrate our organization’s 90th birthday. When North Light Community Center was established in 1936, the idea was simple: a safe space, an open door, and the opportunity to learn and grow. These values still hold true 90 years later. North Light was founded on the belief that young people, when given the opportunity and a safe space, will become leaders in the community. We see this every day in the halls of North Light. We see our kids becoming braver and stronger as they grow, and our teens learning the soft skills they need to be the next generation’s entrepreneurs, leaders, and hard workers. We see this at our food pantry where participants are given the resources they need to navigate the week.
This was a season of change at North Light, but one thing that does not change are the community partners who offer us constant guidance and support. In just the first half of the year, we welcomed over a dozen volunteer groups into our building, in addition to the long-standing support provided by institutions like Villanova University. Most recently, we partnered with Grab n’ Flow, an organization that provides period products and post-partum supplies. We are now home to a Grab n’ Flow shed for anyone who needs supplies– the first of its kind in Northwest Philadelphia.
Our “All Jazzed Up” Gala was a success and set us on the path to a successful spring. Seeing our friends, neighbors, and families all come together helped us recognize the importance of our beautiful center and the lives that it touches. To truly understand what your support makes possible, we invite you to read this testimonial from a parent of one of our Kid Zone participants.
“I wanted to take a moment to sincerely thank you for taking the time to work with my son. He truly appreciates your support. I also want to express my appreciation for the staff here. Your team members have played an important role in helping my son develop better coping skills and improve his communication and that has meant a great deal to us!”
North Light Community Center remains committed to our mission, our programs, and our volunteers. Looking ahead to our next 90 years, we are excited to grow our programs, update our building, and continue to provide quality programming for our kids and teens. We know that together we can accomplish a lot — not only to make North Light’s founders proud, but to be a shining example of what it means to create a lasting impact on our community!
