The Summer Career Exploration Program is a six-week career and mentoring program for high school students who have just completed 10th, 11th or 12th grade. This program enables students to work in a well-supervised work environment, while receiving job related counseling. Students are encouraged to explore career and vocational job opportunities in the private sector. This allows students to gain real life work experience while earning money. Students may contact Program Director, Billy Eisenberg, in March to complete an application and to begin the placement process. To participate in this program a student must:

  • Be enrolled in school or have graduated prior to the beginning of the program.
  • Have completed the 10th, 11th or 12th grade.
  • Fall within the family income criteria (250% of the most recent federal poverty level according to family size).
A highly successful and effective venture, SCEP continues to thrive due to the partnership of two individuals. These individuals are the employers and the college aged students, hired to "monitor" the progress of the students. College monitors visit students a minimum of twice a week. They organize and facilitate weekly workshops and an end of program awards dinner, but most importantly College Monitors mentor and are role models to high school youth. To qualify as a college monitor, participants must:
  • Be currently enrolled in a college or university.
  • Have completed at least two years at a college or university.
  • Be between the ages of 18 to 24.
Participating employers make a difference in a young person’s life with a commitment to:
  • Interview, then select students who have completed pre-employment training.
  • Pay at least minimum wage for an additional 5 to 10 hours/week for six weeks or 30 hours. The program pays an additional 20 hours/week for six weeks or 120 hours.
  • Mentor students.
  • Meet with Monitors and other North Light Staff as needed.
